A regional museum with an art collection and a historical document archive, the Albany Institute suffered from fragmentation of gallery, collections storage, public program spaces and residence in two unconnected landmark structures. A master plan grouped collections and non-collections and public and non-public spaces into separate zones. The new design features a glass entrance lobby linking the two structures, replacement of an auditorium structure with a collections storage wing, and a renovation of existing structures. The three-level glass lobby is a modern element contrasting with the classical historic buildings.
