A regional museum housing an art collection and a historical document archive, the Albany Institute commissioned a masterplan for the 21st century. To resolve issues with its residence in two unconnected structures, the masterplan reorganized the museum, grouping collections and non collections uses, and linking the buildings together. The new design connects the two landmark structures with a new 3 level glass lobby, a modern element contrasting with the classically detailed buildings. The existing structures were restored, preserving significant architectural detailing. The preservation of the existing landmark buildings in the context of a vibrant museum experience has created a new image for the Institute.
